W. Maxwell Prince, Martín Morazzo, and Chris O’Halloran, the creative team behind the Image series Ice Cream Man, will serve up four new flavors of Kryptonite in a new five-issue Black Label series, Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum. When the new substances are found in deep space, Superman teams up with Batman to figure out what dangers they present and how to handle them. DC Comics will publish the first issue on August 13, 2025, with a main cover by Morazzo and O’Halloran and variant covers by Tula Lotay and Juan Ferreyra, a foil variant by Wes Craig, and a 1:25 variant by Alex Eckman-Lawn. The series is rated 17+ and all covers are priced at $5.99.
“We’ve developed a reputation for pretty left-of-center experimentation, with respect to comics storytelling,” Prince said in a statement accompanying the announcement, “and this is basically what we’re doing over the 5 issues of Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum: using our unique voice in comics to tell a Supes yarn that’s both strange and timeless—out there and also totally grounded. You might know what Green, Red and Black Kryptonite does to Superman, but what about Purple? Or Cobalt? Or Speckled?”
“Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum is a story about new types of Kryptonite, and the effect those new types have on Kal-El and his world,” added DC group editor Paul Kaminski. “The series offers an opportunity to unleash the acclaimed Ice Cream Man creative team on the DCU, with episodic tales that play with storytelling styles. These tales are often warped, suspenseful and occasionally horrific, and lean into the rich stylings of the silver age Superman franchise.”
Ice Cream Man is a dark comedy/horror series published by Image Comics since 2018. The series has been optioned by Screen Gems (see “‘Ice Cream Man’ Adaptation”), and Ice Cream Man #39 was nominated for the 2025 Eisner Award for Best Single Issue/One-Shot (see “2025 Eisner Nominees Announced”).
