Following the successful premiere of the Thunderbolts* movie, Marvel Comics is following up with a surprise that was foreshadowed in the film: The ongoing series previously announced as New Thunderbolts* has been retitled New Avengers. The creative team of writer Sam Humphries and artist Ton Lima remains the same, as does the lineup of the eponymous team: The Winter Soldier, Black Widow, Eddie Brock, Carnage, The Hulk, Namor, Clea, and Wolverine. Their mission: To take down the evil clones of the Illuminati. Marvel plans for this series, like the first New Avengers series by Brian Michael Bendis and David Finch, to define a new era for the team.
The first issue of New Avengers will be released on June 11, 2025, with a main cover by Stephen Segovia, variants by Mark Bagley and Stephanie Hans, Black Widow/Winter Soldier and Carnage/Wolverine variants by Derrick Chew” a Clea/Namor variant by Ejikure, a Hulk variant by Woo-Chul Lee, a spoiler homage variant by Whilce Portacio, a Killuminati variant by Josemaria Casanovas, a Marvel Studios variant by Andy Park, and a logo variant.
"Plot twist—it's been New Avengers all along!” Humphries said in a statement accompanying the announcement. “I promised surprises, and this is the first of many... And this era has two combustible teams: the New Avengers and the Killuminati!"
The Thunderbolts* movie premiered on May 2 (see “‘Thunderbolts*’ Box Office”), and Marvel announced the new ongoing series, then titled New Thunderbolts*, in March (see “‘New Thunderbolts’ Ongoing”).
